May's Over

May was kind of a blur. I was a little late getting to Emily's because my flight from JFK was cancelled, but I got to spend the evening celebrating Sam's birthday and staying over at their home so I was really glad that my flight got changed until the next day! I really enjoyed spending 2 weeks with Lucy and Gavin while their parents enjoyed the time in Germany. It was nice to be able to see Vermont without snow, with all the spring rains it is so green and lush. Jef was there the first weekend so he took walks with the kids and got Lucy's bike tires pumped up and ready for a fun summer.

The kids and I spent the next weekend Saturday in Burlington at a kids fair and the Echo Aquarium.

Lucy took advantage of a sunny afternoon to open up a lemonade stand in the front yard, she had quite a few customers even though they don't get much traffic by the house. While the kids were at school I looked through Emily's boxes of wool and found some beautiful pieces to make a rug for her, then the kids and I gave it to her for a late Mother's Day gift when she returned from Germany. There's more wool so she said I could come back anytime... actually there's some really nice blues.....

One of my favorite Vermont sites is the Hope Cemetery in Barre. That is where the stone carvers from Italy settled to work at the granite quarries and they carved some fantastic headstones. It makes me want to find out the stories behind the carvings and I wonder what kind of carving would represent my own life to future generations of people who saw it.

When I got home it was time to get down to some serious work on the Bungalow. I wanted it to look nice when Emily and Christina come to see it next weekend, and I wanted Lydia to see the great improvements. We have painted the foundations so they are no longer horrid red, that was a huge project. Also in the past 100 years some of the painters have not worried much about dripping paint onto the brick then they painted so I have been cleaning the brick, one brick at a time, to get the old paint drips off. The parts that I have been able to finish look great but it just the makes the other look even worse. It is not a quick job so I will have something to keep me busy in my spare time. The previous owner had planted lots of roses and other flowers in the front yard and I am enjoying the benefits, the front yard is blazing with colors and the roses are beautiful! All this also means that work on the inside of the house has slowed to a crawl but we have been able to restore 3 of the leaded glass windows and have taken one more down to work on. That just leaves us 2 more to take out. I haven't found a 'paying' job yet so I still have plenty of time to work on the bungalow after all the kids leave. I am very excited about being able to have them here for a few days!

My college career begins again on Thursday. I just have one class, it should be an interesting experience for me.. we'll see how it goes.
