Snowbird & Brighton Point

January 30th - Snowbird

Surprisingly, it is a quiet day up here right next to heaven at the top of the Rocky Mountains. We have had new snow and today the sun is out. They parked a record number of cars in the parking lots and along the main road. Lots of families came up today so I’ve had a bunch of parents come in to see if their children’s lost gloves or helmets have been turned in. And several cel phones have been turned in already. People just have a hard time remembering to zip their pockets! I have a supply of phones, cameras, and i-pods that people have not come in to claim, and a large stack of lost property reports from people whose phone, cameras, gloves, goggles, skis, and i-pods are lost on the mountain… waiting for summer to reveal them. It is probably a real treasure hunt to go hiking along the ski runs in summer!

I have been on the job here in Public Safety for just over a month and I think I have figured out about 2/3 of the things I am responsible to do. I keep having one of the Officers come in and say … by the way did you know that you were supposed to do …. or Kent (the previous owner of my position) would do this or that or run this report. I am finally feeling a little more confident, and have caught up with most of the things that went un-finished during the 6 weeks there was no one doing this job. For a while there I wondered if I would ever get all of these things figured out. It took the whole first week to learn enough to know what to email to Kent to ask how to do something or where to put it when I was done. I have a book of instructions now, I’m glad Kent is so willing to help me, even if it is just through email. And there is still a lot to learn, but these guys I work with are great and very helpful. It is really fun to be here at Snowbird again even if it seems like I’m at the center of a whirl-wind. There are drawers I haven’t even opened yet and files I still can’t find but I know they’re here somewhere. Most days I get home totally worn out.
I’ve driven up the mountain in a blizzard, and driven down in a line that took an hour to travel just the 6 miles to the valley. I love being up here out of the smog and inversions that the valley people are suffering from. It is beautiful in the canyon!

Since part of my job is to type up the reports of all the ‘incidents’ that happen at Snowbird I get to see all of the really stupid or crazy things that people do. I think, I’m glad my kids were not like that…or maybe I am just glad I don’t know, I’ll just keep thinking they were practically perfect.

I got a call from a man today who was at Snowbird a couple of days ago, finished skiing and decided to finish his evening at the Tram Club. He called today, from Colorado, to see if his skis were still here. That must have been some party! And yes, we mailed him his skis….. I also mailed a set of skis to a lady in England who had her skis swapped with someone else whose skis looked very similar to hers. Good thing we make money in the fall when we sell off all the lost and found that hasn’t been claimed or we couldn’t locate the owner.

February 1st - Brighton Point

I am getting this together while I wait on hold with the Dr's office, Dylan has been suffering with a cold and sore throat for 2 weeks now and doesn't seem to be improving at all so I am trying to get him in to the Dr. today. Sweet baby James and Anna both have colds and coughs, and I understand that Mason is just feeling better from the cold he got up here at Christmas. There have been a few Officers at work who have been out on sick days (I prefer them to stay home with their germs). This cold seems to be a particularly vicious one!

Our renter at the Bungalow is moving out so Dylan is going to move into the basement at the Bungalow after we get a chance to clean the carpets and do a couple of things. That means it will be just me and Big Charlie here most of the time. I used to dream of having a clean, quiet house, but somehow I think it won't be as great as I had once thought. I will definitely have to give Big Charlie a bath!!!

Dave & Kara are going to build a new home so they came over yesterday to have Jef help with the plans. Rose and James came too so we had a fun visit, I made dinner, and we got out a few boxes of the old slides. We had a fun walk down memory lane until the bulb went out on the projector. My job today is to see if I can buy a new bulb somewhere. Baby James has started walking a little, at least until he realizes he's out there on his own, then he sits down. It won't be long until he's on the run!!

Grandpa is coming up this afternoon to visit, I haven't seen him since Christmas Eve. Time really flys!! Love, Mom
